Quantum Field Theory Between Rigor and Pragmatism
Johannes Branahl
Quantum Field Theory (QFT), the foundational framework of particle physics, has long existed in a state of tension between empirical success and mathematical rigor. Conventional QFT (CQFT), which underpins the Standard Model, offers unparalleled predictive accuracy but relies on inconsistent and ad hoc methods. In contrast, axiomatic QFT (AQFT) aspires to a consistent, mathematically rigorous foundation, yet lacks empirical applicability. This paper introduces the heuristic vehicle of a realism quotient to model and navigate this tension, framing it as a dynamic balance between realism and instrumentalism in the mathematical structures of physical theories. By reconstructing the historical development of QFT and extrapolating its trajectory, the paper offers both a descriptive account of theoretical progress and a normative proposal: that CQFT and AQFT must converge to address selected challenges of physics beyond the Standard Model. The model also contributes to broader debates in scientific realism, offering a structured framework for understanding the interplay between empirical adequacy and conceptual robustness and mathematical rigour in foundational physics.

Historical Perspectives

Mathematician | 1823-1891

“God made the integers, all else is the work of man.” This fundamental belief shapes my critique of modern quantum field theory. The reliance on continuum mathematics and infinite-dimensional spaces is deeply problematic from a constructivist perspective.

While I acknowledge the empirical successes of conventional QFT, its mathematical foundations are unsound. The renormalization procedures appear to me as clever but ultimately ad hoc manipulations to conceal the theory’s inherent inconsistencies. A truly rigorous approach would build quantum theory from finite, discrete algebraic structures that can be explicitly constructed.

The axiomatic QFT approach is a step in the right direction, but still too wedded to analytical methods. The mathematical physics community should instead focus on developing finite algebraic models that can approximate continuum results without requiring infinite processes.

M
James Clerk Maxwell
Physicist | 1831-1879

As someone who sought to establish rigorous mathematical foundations for electromagnetic theory, I find the axiomatic QFT approach philosophically appealing. However, we must remember that physical theories must ultimately serve to explain and predict natural phenomena.

The tension between mathematical rigor and empirical adequacy is not new – my own work on electromagnetism faced similar challenges. The key is to find the right balance. Conventional QFT’s predictive successes cannot be ignored, even if its mathematical foundations are unsatisfactory.

I would advocate for a middle path: develop axiomatic foundations that can justify the successful computational techniques of conventional QFT, while identifying which mathematical idealizations are truly essential and which can be refined or replaced. The history of physics shows that such unification of rigor and pragmatism is possible, as my equations demonstrated for electricity, magnetism and light.

Synthesis of Kronecker and Maxwell’s Positions

While Kronecker emphasizes the necessity of finite, explicit constructions in mathematics, advocating for a rigorous foundation built on concrete algebra, Maxwell underscores the importance of balancing theoretical rigor with empirical success. Kronecker’s skepticism towards non-constructive mathematical tools contrasts with Maxwell’s support for axiomatic approaches that can unify theory and experiment.

Both perspectives highlight the tension between mathematical rigor and empirical applicability in Quantum Field Theory. Kronecker’s insistence on constructibility and Maxwell’s advocacy for a synthesis of axiomatic rigor and empirical adequacy suggest a complementary approach: a foundation that is both mathematically sound and empirically robust. This synthesis points towards a future where theoretical physics can achieve both conceptual clarity and practical predictive power.

Quantum Field Theory Between Rigor and Pragmatism

Johannes Branahl Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Heidelberg
Leopold Kronecker’s Comments
On “mathematical rigor”: “Dio fece i numeri interi, tutto il resto è opera dell’uomo” – Critico verso il rigore matematico astratto.
On “dynamic balance between realism and instrumentalism”: Scettico verso strumenti matematici non costruttivi e il “realismo matematico”.
On “mathematical rigour in foundational physics”: Il rigore è vuoto senza costruttibilità finita ed esplicita.
James Clerk Maxwell’s Comments
On “axiomatic QFT (AQFT)”: Favorevole agli approcci assiomatici rigorosi come nell’elettromagnetismo.
On “CQFT and AQFT must converge”: La convergenza teoria-esperimento è essenziale per la fisica.
On “empirical adequacy and conceptual robustness”: Equilibrio tra adeguatezza empirica e robustezza concettuale.
